{"id":4628,"date":"2020-05-20T22:35:04","date_gmt":"2020-05-20T22:35:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mli.org.au\/?p=4628"},"modified":"2020-05-20T22:39:03","modified_gmt":"2020-05-20T22:39:03","slug":"frog-surveys-of-yanco-creek-and-tributaries-and-farm-habitats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mli.org.au\/home\/frog-surveys-of-yanco-creek-and-tributaries-and-farm-habitats\/","title":{"rendered":"Frog surveys of Yanco Creek and tributaries and farm habitats"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The summer\nof 2019\/20 saw an extended drought across the Yanco Creek system and much of\ninland NSW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To find out how our native wetland fauna was faring, a frog refuge study was undertaken by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"YACTAC (Yanco Creek and Tributaries Advisory Council) (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/landcare.nsw.gov.au\/groups\/yanco-creek-and-tributaries-advisory-council\" target=\"_blank\">YACTAC (Yanco Creek and Tributaries Advisory Council)<\/a> in partnership with researchers at the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Institute for Land, Water and Society at Charles Sturt University (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csu.edu.au\/research\/ilws\" target=\"_blank\">Institute for Land, Water and Society at Charles Sturt University<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What were the aims of the research?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The study\naimed to find out how and where frog populations were surviving the drought.\nThe study addressed a few key questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Were\nfrogs persisting in our creek environments during drought?<\/li><li>Were\nthere native frogs persisting in farm dams and irrigation infrastructure?<\/li><li>Could\nwe find any threatened southern Bell frogs? If so where were they surviving\nduring drought?<\/li><li>What\nfactors could we identify that might make a wetland or creek a good refuge\nhabitat for frogs?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey\nlooked at several sites along the Yanco, Billabong and Columbo Creeks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/mli.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Southern-Bell-frog-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4629\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mli.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Southern-Bell-frog-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mli.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Southern-Bell-frog-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/mli.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Southern-Bell-frog-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mli.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Southern-Bell-frog-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mli.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Southern-Bell-frog.jpg 1225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption>Southern Bell frogs were found in the upper reaches of the Yanco Creek system <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What were the results?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, seven species of frog were identified: Spotted Marsh frog, Barking Marsh frog and Eastern Sign-bearing froglet, Eastern Banjo frog, Giant Banjo frog, Peron\u2019s Tree frog and the Southern Bell frog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spotted Marsh frog and Peron\u2019s Tree frog were found almost everywhere, with Eastern Sign-bearing froglet and Barking Marsh frog found at a high proportion of sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The threatened Southern Bell frog were found at two sites last spring, with single frogs found in one farm dam and in the Yanco Creek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By January 2020 however, there had been a rise in creek water levels thanks to environmental flows and inter-valley transfer flows.
