Glenn Currie<\/h2>\r\n\r\n

Glenn has been involved with Narrandera Landcare for four years. He joined not long after arriving in Narrandera, saying that he wanted to join a community group and “planting trees seemed like a worthwhile thing to do!”<\/p>\r\n\r\n

It started with tree planting…<\/h4>\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n

Through\u00a0Narrandera Landcare, Glenn has organised many community planting days.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

The first were to help in the completion of his Certificate III in Conservation & Land Management, but once he had achieved that Glenn continued to organise more planting activities. He has also organised other community events like Wildflower and Wattle Walks, and regular bird surveys at the wetlands.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Glenn has organised a number of environmental activities involving local schools, including involving students in National Tree Day plantings. When local schools requested some assistance to run workshops at Narrandera Wetlands, Glenn was quick to offer his help, and talked with the children about the functioning of the wetlands, water quality and the flora and fauna down there.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Narrandera Community Garden<\/h4>\r\n\r\n

The Narrandera Community Garden has been a big beneficiary of Glenn’s enthusiasm and dedication; he spends significant time attending to maintenance and development of the Garden, and keeps the community advised of special activities.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Several years ago, Glenn helped start a small nursery where the group can grow their own native seedlings. Glenn always encourages the community to join in, and lots of people volunteer to help propagate the seedlings. It can be nince months from sowing seed to planting the seedlings, so there is lots of work involved, but Glenn says “we get enough support to make it happen”.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Many of the seedlings he has helped propagate have been used for local revegetation projects, and he has also donated trays of seedlings to neigbouring Landcare groups, to use in their projects. Glenn also notes that growing their own seedlings helps immensely when applying for other funds to do things.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Building up Narrandera Landcare<\/h4>\r\n\r\n

Glenn has put a lot of effort into building up Narrandera Landcare’s profile on social media, ensuring the group’s activities are well publicised. This has resulted in great participation by members, and helped attract new members as well.\"\"<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Applying for grant funding can be time-consuming and difficult, but Glenn has been generous with his time in seeking grant funding for various projects. His involvement has extended to management and acquittal of various projects.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The importance of Landcare<\/h4>\r\n\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n\r\n

The role Landcare plays in bringing us together as a society is something Glenn believes strongly in. The simple concept of caring for the land, which is at the heart of Landcare, helps to unite people as a community.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

In terms of what he has personally gained from being involved in Landcare, Glenn says: “I’ve met\u00a0lots of people, developed organisational and computer skills I didn’t know I had, and feel I’m making some sort of contribution to the world.”<\/p>\r\n\r\n
