Relative<\/span>\u00a0to plants and animals, the\u00a0<\/span>diversity and significance of fung<\/span>i is little known<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Fungi are\u00a0<\/span>frequently<\/span>\u00a0referred to as the \u201cForgotten Kingdom<\/span>\u201d,<\/span>\u00a0yet<\/span>\u00a0they<\/span>\u00a0are vital in creating and stabilising soils, nourishing and interconnecting plants, recycling nutrients,\u00a0<\/span>retaining<\/span>\u00a0and filtering water, restoring environmental damage and\u00a0<\/span>essentially underpinning<\/span>\u00a0ecosystem health and resilience.\u202f<\/span>Fungi\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>often underestimated importance and\u00a0<\/span>widespread lack of awareness hampers thorough ecological assessments and effective conservation efforts<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The solution<\/h2>\n

Murrumbidgee Landcare Inc. tackled the significant knowledge gap around fungi by running specialised workshops led by ecologist<\/span>\u00a0and environmental photographer<\/span>\u00a0Alison Pouliot. The \u201cFungi & Soil Health<\/span>: An Underground Conversation<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>workshop series<\/span>, held throughout the Riverina, aimed to boost understanding of the Kingdom Fungi\u2014including identification basics, ecological importance, cultural connections, and their use in land restoration. Participants also took part in hands-on soil pit discussions to better understand and improve soil health. This initiative immersed people in the crucial\u00a0<\/span>roles<\/span>\u00a0fungi play,\u00a0<\/span>ultimately equipping<\/span>\u00a0citizen scientists to gather data and broaden our shared understanding of these vital organisms.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The impact<\/h2>\n

The series of workshops contributed to increased regional mycology and soil health understanding, addressing the long-standing neglect of fungi as a critical component of our ecosystem. Participants gained greater knowledge of the diversity of the Kingdom Fungi and the basic principles of fungus identification, including fungi from the various local habitat types and those from further afield. In addition to their ecological significance, attendees also learnt various cultural aspects of fungi, such as edibility and toxicity, and their use in land restoration.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Combining an interactive soil pit discussion complimented soil health education ultimately leading to greater ecosystem resilience across the landscape.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
