A BioBlitz is a citizen science event that invites people to explore their local environment and record plants, animals and fungi using the free iNaturalist app. Open to all ages and experience levels, it\u2019s a simple way to contribute valuable biodiversity data. Just download the app, head outside, and start observing.<\/p>\n

Each year, Murrumbidgee Landcare partners with local Landcare groups to deliver a range of BioBlitz events across the catchment, creating opportunities for the community to get involved. The 2026 Great Southern BioBlitz Murrumbidgee Project<\/a> is now available to join.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”50″][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_toggle title=”What is a BioBlitz?” css=””]A\u00a0BioBlitz is an intense period of biological surveying in an attempt to record all the living species\u00a0within a designated area. Groups of scientists, naturalists and community members conduct an intensive\u00a0flora and fauna survey\u00a0over a designated time period. There is a public component to many BioBlitzes, with the goal of getting the public interested in biodiversity.[\/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”How do we contribute to this BioBlitz?” css=””]We are utilising an app called iNaturalist.<\/p>\n

iNaturalist is an online social network and citizen science platform where people share observations of plants, animals, fungi and other organisms to help identify them and contribute to biodiversity research and conservation.<\/p>\n

iNaturalist is a very simple app to utilise:<\/p>\n

1 \u2013 Download the app onto your device or use the online version.<\/p>\n

2 \u2013 Register an account on iNaturalist.<\/p>\n

3 \u2013 Join the Murrumbidgee Project<\/a> on iNaturalist<\/p>\n

4 \u2013 Begin making observations.<\/p>\n

iNaturalist have a series of How-To<\/a> guides to assist when using their app.[\/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”What is the Great Southern BioBlitz?” css=””]Within the iNaturalist app, there are projects we can contribute to. The Great Southern BioBlitz covers the Southern Hemisphere and is considered an umbrella project. Murrumbidgee Landcare has registered the NRM area they operate across to capture observations for the Great Southern BioBlitz, this is referred to as a region. During the Great Southern BioBlitz<\/a>, updates are provided on \u00a0the progress of regions, how many observations and observers they have contributing. Last year, Greater Melbourne region achieved top position, with Greater Sydney coming in second \u2013 Let\u2019s show them what rural NSW is capable of![\/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”When is the Great Southern BioBlitz?” css=””]This year, the Great Southern BioBlitz will be held from the 27th<\/sup> of November until the 30th<\/sup> of November 2026, inclusive. Observations made during this time will be included in the project.[\/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Where is the Great Southern BioBlitz?” css=””]It encompasses the entire Southern Hemisphere \u2013 However, Murrumbidgee Landcare has registered the area outlined in the Great Southern BioBlitz Project<\/a>.[\/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Why are we seeing smaller events advertised?” css=””]This ties back into, \u2018What is a BioBlitz\u2019.<\/p>\n
