First Nations People and scientists working together to monitor Country through citizen science<\/strong><\/p>\n

We are lucky enough that there are people in the world who\u00a0<\/span>care deeply<\/span>\u00a0about\u00a0<\/span>our natural environment<\/span>. Whether they are scientist<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/span>, people who work in natural resource management or First Nations People who have been caring for Country since time\u00a0<\/span>immemorial<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>However<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0the most common discussion<\/span>\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0we have\u00a0<\/span>in this field of work is that<\/span>\u00a0there\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0not enough\u00a0<\/span>people out on the ground\u00a0<\/span>doing the monitoring<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and our\u00a0<\/span>understanding of what is truly going on in the environment<\/span>\u00a0through monitoring<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>can be limited.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Therefore<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0through the Great Southern BioBlitz we call<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0on our friends, family<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>community<\/span>, and allied organisations<\/span>\u00a0to come join us nature lovers\u00a0<\/span>for a hands-on exploration\u00a0<\/span>at the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Ramsar-listed Fivebough<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>etland<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0in Leeton<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>As a community<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0we were\u00a0<\/span>able to\u00a0<\/span>participate<\/span>\u00a0in citizen science and\u00a0<\/span>record<\/span>\u00a0o<\/span>u<\/span>r observations of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>any living thing into\u00a0<\/span>iNaturalist<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>iNaturalist<\/span>\u00a0is a\u00a0<\/span>citizen<\/span>\u00a0science database that feeds directly back to\u00a0<\/span>qualified scientists.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>For many, it was their first chance to look closely at the wetlands\u2019 rich ecology and learn how citizen science can help protect the natural world on their doorstep.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whilst we were busily making our observations, First Nations People shared stories of cultural connection, explaining the significance of totems, rock art, and stonework that reflect thousands of years of Wiradjuri people\u2019s expertise and caring for Country. Their words set a thoughtful tone, reminding everyone that caring for Country is both a privilege and a shared responsibility. Alongside the First Nations People, scientists also shared their knowledge on plants, frog<\/span>s, birds<\/span>,\u00a0and how those things are supported by environmental water.<\/span><\/p>\n

This interactive approach gave participants a new way to engage with the wetlands and people – blending culture, technology, curiosity, connection and conservation in action.<\/span><\/p>\n
