What is the Great Southern BioBlitz?
The Great Southern Bioblitz (GSB) is an annual citizen science event that invites participants across the Southern Hemisphere to document and record biodiversity during the spring season. This initiative aims to highlight the rich variety of life in these regions and engage the public in scientific exploration.
Observations made during the event are recorded using the iNaturalist platform, where users can upload photos and data of flora, fauna, fungi, and other organisms. This data contributes to a global database that aids in biodiversity research and conservation efforts.
Before the Event
- Download iNaturalist: Create an account and familiarise yourself with the app before the event. Practice making a few observations to get comfortable with its features.
- Bring the Right Gear: Ensure you have a smartphone or digital camera, comfortable walking shoes, water, and snacks.

- Work in Groups: Join a group to make observations. This allows for shared knowledge and support.
- Take Multiple Photos: Capture several images of each organism you observe. This helps with identification later and allows others to assist you in confirming species.
- Ask for Help: If you're unsure about what you've found, don’t hesitate to ask group leaders or more experienced participants for assistance. They can provide valuable insights and guidance.
