Aussie Bird Count

What is Aussie Bird Count?

The Aussie Bird Count is a national citizen science project coordinated by BirdLife Australia. Each year, people across Australia are invited to spend just 20 minutes in one outdoor location, count the birds they see, and submit their observations through the free Aussie Bird Count app or website.aussiebirdcount.org+1

The 2026 Aussie Bird Count runs from 19–25 October. You can take part in your backyard, on your balcony, at school, on-farm, in a local park, along a creek or in nearby bushland.

You do not need to be a bird expert. The app includes a built-in bird finder and field guide to help you identify the birds around you.

Why is Aussie Bird Count a good tool to use?

The Aussie Bird Count is an easy and accessible way for community members to contribute to citizen science. Every 20-minute count helps build a national snapshot of Australia’s birdlife, which can support research, conservation planning and a better understanding of how bird populations are changing over time.apps.apple+1

It is a good tool to use because it:

  • Requires only 20 minutes and no previous bird identification experience

  • Can be done almost anywhere, including backyards, schools, farms, parks and reserves

  • Provides a free app with a bird finder and field guide to support identification

  • Encourages people of all ages to connect with local nature

  • Allows families, schools, Landcare groups and community organisations to take part together

  • Contributes useful observations to a larger national citizen science dataset

For Murrumbidgee Landcare, the Aussie Bird Count is also a practical way to encourage people to notice and record the birds that share local gardens, farms, waterways, towns and remnant vegetation.
