Great Southern BioBlitz 2025: Murrumbidgee

Great Southern BioBlitz 2025: Murrumbidgee

Interested in contributing to science? The Great Southern BioBlitz is an annual project facilitated on iNaturalist between the 24th of October and the 27th of October 2025. Community members are able to download the iNaturalist app for free and join the project. It sounds complicated, but realistically, you’ll download an app, go for a walk and begin adding your observations!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a BioBlitz?

A BioBlitz is an intense period of biological surveying in an attempt to record all the living species within a designated area. Groups of scientists, naturalists and community members conduct an intensive flora and fauna survey over a designated time period. There is a public component to many BioBlitzes, with the goal of getting the public interested in biodiversity.

How do we contribute to this BioBlitz?

We are utilising an app called iNaturalist.

iNaturalist is an online social network and citizen science platform where people share observations of plants, animals, fungi and other organisms to help identify them and contribute to biodiversity research and conservation.

iNaturalist is a very simple app to utilise:

1 – Download the app onto your device or use the online version.

2 – Register an account on iNaturalist.

3 – Join the Murrumbidgee Project on iNaturalist

4 – Begin making observations.

iNaturalist have a series of How-To guides to assist when using their app.

What is the Great Southern BioBlitz?

Within the iNaturalist app, there are projects we can contribute to. The Great Southern BioBlitz covers the Southern Hemisphere and is considered an umbrella project. Murrumbidgee Landcare has registered the NRM area they operate across to capture observations for the Great Southern BioBlitz, this is referred to as a region. During the Great Southern BioBlitz, updates are provided on  the progress of regions, how many observations and observers they have contributing. Last year, Greater Melbourne region achieved top position, with Greater Sydney coming in second – Let’s show them what rural NSW is capable of!

When is the Great Southern BioBlitz?

This year, the Great Southern BioBlitz will be held from the 24th of October until the 27th of October 2025, inclusive. Observations made during this time will be included in the project.

Where is the Great Southern BioBlitz?

It encompasses the entire Southern Hemisphere – However, Murrumbidgee Landcare has registered the area outlined in the above map.

Why are we seeing smaller events advertised?

This ties back into, ‘What is a BioBlitz’.

Providing opportunities for community members and experts assists in education and awareness for local environmental projects, local flora and fauna, and creates a cohesive community that collectively fosters environmental stewardship.

Why do we need an FAQ?

Understandably, there’s a lot of information to take in. It can be simplified; Download the iNaturalist app, join the project, go for a walk and make observations in the mapped area. If you are interested in learning from experts during this time, attend one of the smaller events that are advertised.
