About the workshop
This workshop will show how practical First Nations land management can drive biodiversity recovery and strengthen the health of the Tumut Wetlands. Guided by cultural fire practitioners, Landcare and the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT), participants will explore how cultural burning works alongside weed control and planting to restore wetland ground‑layer vegetation and habitat.
What you’ll experience
- Walk‑through of the 2025 cultural burn site, discussing changes in vegetation and lessons learned.
- Demonstration of low‑intensity cultural burning techniques (conditions permitting).
- Group discussions around the cultural significance of wetlands and riparian flood plains.
- Group discussions on Private Land Conservation and the role of the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust.
- Group discussions on combining cultural fire, community planting and ongoing weed management in a multi‑year restoration program.
Who should attend
Landholders, Landcare members, community volunteers, agency staff, students and anyone interested in cultural fire, wetlands and biodiversity recovery.
What to bring
Sturdy enclosed shoes, long sleeves and pants, hat, sunscreen, mozzie repellant, water bottle and weather‑appropriate clothing. Light catering will be provided; please advise dietary requirements at registration.
