John Feehan: Known as ‘the Farmer’s Friend’, entomologist John Feehan is a recognised authority on dung beetles in Australia.
Brad Thorsby: Farm host and Chair of Harden Murrumburrah Landcare Group
What to Expect:
- Dung Beetle Identification and Talk: We will deep dive into the world of dung beetles with John. Expect the unexpected—what these little beetles do beneath your feet might just surprise you! Bring your own dung beetles (clean them up first!) and learn how to identify different species.
- Interactive discussion with like minded graziers about grazing management, and tools such as Thistle Roller.
- An opportunity to network with others and discuss the season and ideas.
Timeline:
8:30 AM: Meet for a cuppa
09:00 AM: Workshop begins with a quick introduction from facilitator of Young District Grazing Group followed by:

- Thistle Roller and grazing discussion/ farm tour
10:30 AM: Morning Tea
11:00 AM: Dung Beetles!

01:00 PM: BYO Lunch for those who can stay for further networking / Workshop Ends
What to bring:
- Water, hat, protective clothing, enclosed shoes and chair
- Dung beetles & plastic tub: Once you RSVP, we'll email you detailed instructions on how to collect them.
This workshop is a collaboration between Young District Landcare & Harden Murrumburrah Landcare group with Julie Roberts, Annika Colenso (Murrumbidgee Landcare Inc.) and Kathy Dawson (Southern Forests Community Landcare, WA). Kathy is working on a project to boost dung beetle numbers in WA. Participants are asked to collect, clean, and donate beetles to help other regions across Australia. In return, Kathy is funding the transport of the beetles, as well as this information day for farmers to learn about the important role of dung beetles and identify local species. Any leftover funds will go to the Landcare groups to fund future Field Days. Local Land Services (LLS) is supporting the event by funding our amazing speaker John.
