On Thursday 31 October, Leigh Mathieson and Annika Colenso had the opportunity to attend the “Sowing the Seeds of Biodiversity” event at Wirraminna Environmental Education Centre in Burrumbuttock. The field day, led by Martin Driver of Plains Sense Vegetation Management, was designed to teach landholders effective techniques to improve grassy woodland groundcover.
Participants were guided through grassy woodland restoration sites and the Seed Production Area at Wirraminna, with insights from experts Judy Frankenberg and Sue Rose, both dedicated volunteers at the centre.
Tash Lappin from Murray Local Land Services also shared her expertise on increasing plant diversity using direct seeding and the process of seed collection.
The event was a fantastic opportunity for Leigh and Annika to learn hands-on techniques for enhancing biodiversity, culminating in sowing seeds collected from the Seed Production Area. The seeds, prepared by Sue Rose and other Wirraminna volunteers, are part of a crucial collection aimed at preserving local plant species.
This field day highlighted the value of connecting landholders with local biodiversity experts and showcased the important work being done at Wirraminna to restore and protect native ecosystems.
Special thanks to the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust and Landcare NSW for making the event possible under the Private Land Conservation Matters project.
