Event Overview

Join the Flow MER team at Fivebough Wetlands and take part in the annual Great Southern Bioblitz. This engaging community event offers participants a chance to discover local plants, animals, insects and water birds, while learning valuable citizen science skills.

Learn about Environmental Water and how it is used in your area to protect and restore our local wetlands and rivers.

Activities

  • iNaturalist 
    Get hands-on support from the team on how to use the iNaturalist app to record observations of plants, animals and insects at the wetlands. Ideal for beginners and budding nature enthusiasts.

  • Bird Watching
    Grab a pair of binoculars and bird ID guides and explore the wetland edges with experienced facilitators. You’ll have an opportunity to observe and record sightings of both local and migratory water birds. The team will be on hand to assist with identification and logging sightings using iNaturalist.

  • Guided Frog Walk at Dusk
    As the sun sets, join a quiet, guided walk along the wetland edges to search for frogs using torches. Learn to spot and identify frogs by their calls with help from frog ID guides and get tips on ethical observation. This session is designed to be low-light and peaceful.

  • Cultural Heritage Walk
    Be led by a local Wiradjuri Elder or cultural knowledge holder for an in-depth exploration of the rich cultural significance of Fivebough Wetlands. Discover traditional ecological knowledge, learn about native bush foods, and hear cultural stories connected to Country.

  • Environmental Water
    Learn about Environmental Water and how it is used in your area to protect and restore our local wetlands and rivers.

Key Information

  • All ages welcome; bring a torch for the frog walk, a hat and water bottle.

  • Accessible paths available. Please wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather.

  • Entry is free, parking is available on-site.

  • Please register your attendance with Flow MER to help us plan for resources.
