National Tree Day is Australia’s largest annual tree planting and nature care event, held every year on the last Sunday in July. Established by Planet Ark in 1996, it has since inspired millions of Australians – individuals, schools, volunteers and businesses – to plant over 28 million native trees and shrubs across the country. This collective action plays an important role in tackling climate change, restoring local habitats and strengthening community connections with nature.
Planting trees is more than just a symbolic gesture – it’s a practical and effective way to restore the environment. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, reduce air pollution, cool urban areas, prevent soil erosion and provide critical habitat and food for native wildlife. Taking part in these events also brings communities together and encourages people of all ages to learn about caring for the environment.
Schools Tree Day (Friday 25 July 2025) and National Tree Day (Sunday 27 July 2025) offer opportunities for all Australians to get involved in creating greener, healthier landscapes.
There are four main events happening this year in the Murrumbidgee region, with community activities in Hay, Osborne, Narrandera and Wagga Wagga. Each event invites locals to participate in tree planting, receive free plants, and access local environmental information.
-
Hay: Hay Plains Landcare is hosting a planting event with free native plants on Thursday 24 July from 1pm to 3pm opposite the Hay Gaol Museum. Registration is recommended here.

You can register online where available or just turn up to the event closest to you. These activities are open to everyone – from experienced tree planters to those new to nature care. Bring your friends, family or workmates for a fun and rewarding day outdoors.
Events in Hay, Osborne, Narrandera and Wagga Wagga contribute to restoring important local environments, from wetlands to riverbanks and public green spaces. Previous projects in the region have planted thousands of trees and improved habitat for native birds and aquatic life. By participating, you are helping to build a greener future for the region and generations to come.
