It’s time to discover (or rediscover) the Riverina Highlands Landcare Nursery! Located in Tumut, the nursery specialises in growing native plants endemic to the Southwest Slopes Bio Region and produces over 80,000 plants each year. It is a vital source of native plants for Landcare and community projects as well as selling to the public.
The nursery not only plays a pivotal role in servicing our environment, it also provides a place of social and mental cohesion. It is primarily manned by community volunteers, including school children, and also utilises programs like work for the dole which provides valuable labour, while participants gain skills and experience. It’s a welcoming place and new volunteers are always needed.
The seeds used for production are sourced from a combination of local volunteer collectors, National Parks and commercial seed sources. The nursery can also grow seedlings for your revegetation project using your own collected seed.
Now is a great time to be planning for next year’s planting. This gives you time to prepare your site and order your plants from the nursery by spring so they can be ready for planting next year. It’s a great idea to consult the newly updated revegetation guides and talk to your Local Landcare Coordinator to set your revegetation project up for success.
