With only limited activities in the Hay region that involved the urban community in Landcare, an opportunity was taken to support community interest in holding a practical tree pruning workshop. The aim was to upskill individuals on the requirements of keeping their backyards and orchards tidy, healthy and free of fruit flies.
There were no suitable trainers in the Hay region to organise and present at the workshop, so the Local Landcare Coordinator worked to develop networks with groups within the community to assist in structuring and running workshops through their organisations. The tree pruning workshop idea was proposed to the local Country Women’s Association branch in Hay, where they decided to take on the task of hosting the workshop.
Through a Community Pop-up grant from Murrumbidgee Landcare, and partnership with the local Landcare group, the workshop was able to source a trainer through Riverina TAFE so that participants could gain an attainment for their work. A local private orchard of a CWA member was marked as the training location and equipment was supplied through the grant. Resource material for fruit fly was sourced through Riverina LLS for participants to take home.
